Adoption Process

PLEASE NOTE: In compliance with the shelter-in-place mandate, ARF is suspending regular programs and services until further notice. View more information here

Friday, March 27 through Thursday, April 2, ARF is offering virtual adoptions as part of BISSELL Pet Foundation's Empty the Shelters.

Thank you for considering adoption, and saving a life! ARF understands the importance of choosing the right pet for your family, and provides a friendly, responsive, customer-oriented adoption service.

When you arrive, sign in and talk to an adoption specialist who will introduce you to shelter guests who may be a good fit. ARF invites the entire family to participate in this important decision, including children! Adopters interested in a dog are encouraged to bring family dogs in for an introduction.

Fill out the Matchmaker Profile before your visit, or at ARF.

ARF's team is excited to guide you in choosing a pet, share information about their history and behavior while at ARF, and provide resources. Finding a great match can take time - please allow at least one hour for the adoption process!

Requirements

Adopters must be 18 or older with valid state-issued photo ID.

Policies

ARF adopts to the first good match and does not place animals on hold. Those interested in a specific pet should arrive early or use ARF's early bird sign-in Wednesday through Friday at 9 am.

ARF will adopt a dog or cat to a family living outside the San Francisco Bay Area if the adopter completes the adoption in person at ARF. ARF encourages those who cannot travel to ARF to contact a nearby shelter or rescue to adopt a local pet who needs a home.

All of ARF's adoptable pets are spayed or neutered, current of vaccinations, microchipped, de-wormed, and applied flea preventative. All dogs over six months are heartworm tested and started on heartworm preventative. All cats are tested for FeLV, and all cats over six months are tested for FIV.

For the safety of the animal, adopted cats must be in carriers and dogs must be on leash when they leave ARF. Both are available for purchase in ARF's Boutique.
