Fixing Mammoth’s Big, Bashful Eyes

Mammoth was found as a stray, our partner shelter didn’t hesitate to contact ARF’s rescue team for assistance. It was immediately clear the 6-month-old French Bulldog mix had a big personality and even bigger eyes! Mammoth’s playfulness was contagious, but as you can tell from his photos, he needed help. Thankfully, our on-site veterinary clinic was ready and waiting when he arrived at our Walnut Creek facility.

Our veterinary team confirmed upon their examination that Mammoth had prolapsed eyelid glands, commonly known as “cherry eye.” This diagnosis meant that his third eyelid gland was swollen in both eyes, a common medical issue with the squishy-faced dogs like Mammoth. Without treatment, there could be more swelling over time, plus irritation to the eye since he isn’t producing enough tears, which are essential to prevent infections and corneal ulcers.

Your support ensures our veterinary team has the resources they need to take immediate action. Within 24 hours of his arrival, we were able to provide Mammoth with surgery to repair his swollen eye glands and antibiotic ophthalmic ointment to help his recovery. The best news is this surgery has a very high success rate and will prevent Mammoth’s eyes from potential infections and corneal ulcers — giving him a bright future outlook.

Happily, Mammoth found his loving, new family not long after his surgery. Supporters like you bring both love and companionship to humans and animals alike. You can give more animals like Mammoth a chance to see their world in a whole new light. Will you be the beacon of light for the next animal in our care?

Animals on Broadway: Sunday, May 7, A Walk to Save Lives

Since our inaugural event in 2000, thousands of people have participated in ARF’s annual walk to save lives as part of Animals on Broadway (AOB). Every dollar raised makes a life-changing difference for the thousands of animals and people impacted by our programs.

We want you to be a champion for animals in need! Sign up as an individual — or team up with friends, family, or co-workers — and join the fun. In addition to the satisfaction of knowing you’re making an impact where it’s needed most, fundraisers win exciting, cumulative prizes for their efforts. $50 raised earns a classic AOB bandana, $100 raised earns a collectable shirt, and the prizes keep going from there! Plus, we offer timely fundraising competitions to sweeten the deal. If that’s not enough, we’re thrilled to announce that the first $25,000 raised by AOB participants will be matched by a generous donor.

What are you waiting for? Register for Animals on Broadway today! Then, don’t forget to join us on Sunday, May 7 at Walnut Creek’s Broadway Plaza to celebrate the unique bond between pets and people at the 23rd annual Animals on Broadway event. We’ll see you there! We’d like to thank our top AOB sponsors: Broadway Plaza, Diablo Subaru of Walnut Creek, Nylabone, and Purina.
