Amethyst and Jasper Were Running Out of Time

Time is a valuable thing — but even more so when you’re an animal at a crowded, municipal shelter. Amethyst and Jasper are a pair of young Shepherd mixes found as strays in California’s Central Valley and taken to one of our partner shelters.

Devastatingly, the shelter was reaching full capacity and didn’t have the resources to continue caring for them. Despite being healthy, well-behaved, and young (3-years-old and 1-year-old, respectively), the duo had been slotted for euthanasia. This is a heartbreaking reality for shelter dogs across the country. Thankfully, ARF’s rescue team got word of their plight.

The staff and volunteers at our partner shelter were brought to tears when they heard we would be saving Amethyst and Jasper from the brink of euthanasia, and bringing them back to ARF. They knew that a second chance at a beautiful life was awaiting this fabulous duo.

Amethyst, just like her name, is a precious gem. She sees the world in a beautiful, curious light and her friendliness calms all who meet her (human and canine alike). While she struggled for months to find a home at her previous shelter, Amethyst was adopted within days of arriving at ARF. Jasper, on the other hand, is taking a different path. His goofy, yet focused, personality makes him an excellent candidate for our Pets and Vets program. He is spending time in a foster home to be further assessed regarding his future as a psychiatric service dog. We’ll be keeping a keen eye on this special pup’s future!

Your support saves lives every single day. Without you, Jasper and Amethyst’s story would have reached a heartbreaking conclusion. And right now you can double your impact, thanks to a generous donor who will match all donations up to $500,000. Your contribution today will ensure more animals like Amethyst and Jasper will thrive. Thank you for your partnership to save lives together.

Fosters Needed For Future Service Dogs

Interested in saving lives from the comfort of your own home?

Our Pets and Vets program not only gives specially-selected shelter dogs their well-deserved second chance, but changes the lives of Veterans. These dogs will train to become psychiatric service dogs or emotional support animals for military Veterans with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, severe anxiety, depression, or other service-related trauma. This unique program has been shown to greatly impact the lives of both dog and Veteran alike, truly Saving Both Ends of the Leash®.

And it all begins with a short stint with a volunteer foster family!

Living with a potential service dog for just a week or two in your home provides our team with valuable information about their behavior, allowing us to match them with a Veteran and training plan to maximize their success. From food to toys, and treats to medical care, we provide all the supplies you’ll need to be a successful foster parent.

Register for our dog foster volunteer orientation to get started! This time next year, you might see your former foster pup in their service dog vest! How’s that for motivation?
